Urban Patchwork

Urban Patchwork is a public-realm project that uses a simple gridded geometry as a framework for inclusive, adaptable and sustainable community space. The design begins with a two-dimensional pattern laid across the site and carefully tailored to its boundaries, movement routes and desire lines, ensuring the public realm responds directly to how people already use the area.

This pattern is then marked, pressed, indented, extruded and selectively extracted to generate a three-dimensional landscape that supports a wide range of everyday activities, from informal gathering and play to rest, events and movement. The resulting spaces are intentionally flexible, allowing the site to evolve with changing community needs over time.

Sustainability is embedded through a robust, low-maintenance material strategy that balances soft and hard surfaces, combining natural materials with durable man-made elements. This approach supports biodiversity, manages surface water and reduces long-term maintenance, while creating a welcoming, legible and socially connective public realm that encourages shared ownership and long-term stewardship by the local community.
