Ilford Housing

Ilford Housing is a socially driven proposal for a constrained site adjacent to Ilford Station, developed in response to the GLA Small Sites Design Challenge. The project reimagines underused urban land as a catalyst for neighbourhood renewal, combining high-quality family housing with an enhanced public realm and integrated green infrastructure.

The scheme is structured around principles of multigenerational living, with flexible and adaptable homes designed to support evolving family needs over time. A network of front gardens, shared courtyards, and active street edges fosters passive supervision, doorstep play, and everyday social interaction, creating a safe and inclusive environment for residents of all ages.

Environmental performance is embedded from the outset through a fabric-first approach and Passivhaus principles, ensuring long-term sustainability, reduced energy demand, and improved comfort. The project also explores how small urban sites can deliver meaningful density without compromising spatial quality or community life.

Rooted in Ilford’s diverse cultural context, the architecture draws on local identity while projecting a confident civic presence. Ilford Housing positions design as a tool for equity; supporting resilience, strengthening community ties, and demonstrating how housing can contribute to a more inclusive and sustainable urban future.
